While there are plenty of ways to make money online, did you know that you can make money with your headphones, too?
That’s right – whether you’re selling custom headphones, transcribing content, doing voice overs, tutoring online or even becoming a virtual assistant, there are plenty of ways to make some extra cash with your headphones.
In this article, we’ll share 9 real-life methods for making money with your headphones. So if you’re looking to add some extra cash in your pockets, read on!
But first, let’s look at some of my favorite headphones to use these methods with.
My favorite headphones for work
The right headphones will not only be important for you the content creator, but also for your customer. They will be the ones listening to your final product, so make sure they are of good quality!
Now that we’ve gone over some of the best headphones for the job, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of how you can make money with them.
Here are the 9 methods:
Method #1: Sell Customized Headphones
This is a great option for those of you who are creative and have an eye for detail. You can find headphones that are blank or have a generic design and add your own personal touch to them. This could be anything from painting them to adding decals or even bedazzling them!
You can create headphones for specific niches of people with niche phrases only they’d connect with (and pay for).
Think about it, you could create custom headphones for:
- DJs
- Coders
- Video Editors
- Music Producers
- Podcasters
- Gamers
- Etc.
Imagine putting a sticker like this:
on these headphones
and selling them for a profit.
All you need is a laptop, Cricut sticker cutting machine, compatible printer for Cricut machines and sticker paper.
Sell 200 in a year for a $15 profit and you’d make $3,000 (that’s for starters) just from customizing and selling headphones!
Method #2: Brand Deals
If you’ve got a good social media following, then this method is definitely for you.
Brands are always looking for influencers to promote their logos, and what better way to do it than with YOUR headphones?
Here’s an example:
NFL coaches where headsets every game to communicate with their players and assistant coaches.
The NFL makes MILLIONS each year placing brand logos on these headsets since millions of viewers watching on TV will see the logos every week.
Bose had reportedly been paying an estimated $40M per year to have their name on the headsets of NFL coaches.
That’s BIG BANK!
But let’s be more practical.
If you have an audience 10K or more brands would be open to paying you to promote their logos on your headphones.
How do you get these deals? It’s not as difficult as you might think! You can start by reaching out to brands that you love and use yourself.
They’ll be more likely to want to partner with you if they’re already familiar with your work.
Another route is to join and leverage influencer indexes like Mavrck and Influence.co to connect with brands looking to collaborate.
This is a great option for YouTubers, Podcasters, DJs, Gamers, etc.
Brands can send you stickers, you put the stickers on your headphone and laugh all the way to the bank!
Doing this right will land you $100 – $500 per month = $1,200 – $6,000 per year!
Method #3: Transcribe Content
If you’re a fast typer with great attention to detail, then this method is for you!
There are so many people out there who create content but don’t have the time (or patience) to transcribe it all themselves.
This is where you come in! You can make money by transcribing content for others.
All you need is your headphones (to listen to audio) and a keyboard to type with (laptop or computer).
Provide Transcriptions for:
- Podcasts
- Interviews
- YouTube Videos
Full time, transcribers on the average pull in decent money!
Annual Nationwide Revenue: $35,802 (source ZipRecruiter)
That’s not bad at all for typing what you hear.
Method #4: Create Voice Overs
If you’ve got a great voice, then this method is for you…
That used to be true 10 years ago.
Truth is, almost any audible voice can find work as a voice-over.
No longer do customers want the polished, TV announcer’s voice.
They need regular, relatable voices that connect with their audience on a personal level.
As long as you can read, learn how to record clean audio and send it to customers, and own a pair of headphones, microphone and software, you’re good to go.
You don’t even need expensive equipment to get started. A simple USB microphone will do the trick! And the software is FREE.
Create Voice Overs for:
- Radio / Digital Ads
- Show Intros
- Video Essays
- Promo Content
- Fictional Content
- Animated Content
- Phone Systems
Fiverr is a great place to start if you’re looking for work as a voice over artist.
They have a huge database of potential customers and make it easy for you to get started.
All you need to do is create a profile, add some samples of your work and wait for customers to find you!
And you can definitely make BIG BANK with voice overs on Fiverr.
Here’s some of the top voiceover talent on Fiverr:
Let’s look at linneas88:
At the time of writing this, her top VO gig “I will record any american or british female voice over or narration, today” has 30,289 reviews (nearly all with a 5 star rating).
That’s over 30,000 voice-over gigs on Fiverr alone.
SO, let’s estimate how much linnease88 has made of this one gig.
But first, let’s remember, these are only gigs that received reviews.
Consider that not all/most customers don’t take the time to rate or give reviews.
Let’s also remember that although this gig is priced at $10, this is the starting price.
If voice-over is longer than 150 words, linnease88 charges more, along with other upgrades that could easily drive the costs up for each gig.
But for the sake of this example, we’ll use the review numbers and $10 gig price.
30,289 gigs x $10 = $302,890!!!
That’s BIG BANK!
Method #5: Tutor Online
If you’re great at a particular subject, then this method is for you!
There are so many people out there who need help with their studies but don’t have the time or money to go to a traditional brick-and-mortar tutor.
This is where you come in! You can make money by tutoring.
What can you talk about all day and do with your eyes closed?
Design, Coding, Engaging on Social Media?
Offer live tutoring services on how to do THAT.
All you need is YOUR HEADPHONES with a mic, a free virtual meeting app, and your knowledge.
The Annual Nationwide salary for online tutors is $45,332 (source ZipRecruiter).
Imagine bringing in an extra $45K with some headphones and your knowledge!
Method #6: Be a Virtual Assistant
Do you have amazing organization skills? Are you always the one your friends ask to make sure the party is running smoothly?
If you answered yes, then becoming a virtual assistant (VA) might be the perfect method for you.
A VA is someone who provides administrative support to businesses and busy people from remote locations.
Simply use your headphones to make calls, handle zoom meetings, etc.
Make sure your headphones have a quality built-in microphone.
Bonus: With your headphones, you can answer calls without looking (and feeling) like an operator at a call center.
As a virtual assistant, you can bring in about $43,646 a year.
Method #7: Be a Virtual DJ
Do you have a knack for music? Do you get lost in tunes for hours on end?
If you answered yes, then being a virtual DJ might be the perfect method for you.
As a virtual DJ, you can make money by playing music for people online.

Method #8: Start a Podcast
Do you have something interesting to say? Are you passionate about a particular topic? If you answered yes, then podcasting might be the perfect method for you.
Podcasts are becoming more and more popular, which means there is a growing demand = opportunity to make extra BANK!
Take Joe Rogan for example:
It was estimated that he made $200 million from his podcast (The Joe Rogan Experience) in partnership with Spotify.
How did he make all that money? He has sponsorships, ads, and affiliates. That’s a lot of revenue streams!
Now let’s get practical.
Would $2,000 to $10,000 per year in additional income help you?
If you answered yes, then starting a podcast is a great method for you to make extra money.
To get started, all you need is a laptop or desktop with Audacity (Free Recording Software), your headphones, and an internet connection.
From there, you record, edit and post your podcast to free podcast hosts like Podbean, Anchor and Acast.
Method #9: Buy & Resell Items
This method takes at least 12 months but renders great profits!
And all you need is headphones and a blog (exactly like this one).
To explain how this works, we’ll use one of the most famous examples, Kyle Macdonald and the One Red Paperclip.
In 2005, Kyle started with one red paperclip and traded it for a fish-shaped pen. He then traded the pen for a doorknob, which he traded for a Coleman stove, and so on.
Within 14 trades, he had turned his red paperclip into a farmhouse.
Watch Kyle tell the story during his Ted Talk:
Kyle mastered the art of trading/selling up. You can learn to do the same.
FYI, Kyle’s farmhouse is estimated by NY Times to be worth $45,000 to $50,000!
Imagine making $45,000 to $50,000 every year by trading up from something as simple as a pair of headphones.
Even if it’s $4,500 dollars extra a year?
BONUS: Stack Methods to Compound Revenue
The methods we’ve shared with you in this article can be done part-time. But what if you want to make more money?
You can always stack the methods!
Imagine if 10% of your working time went to each method and you earned annually 10% of what’s possible.
For example, you could:
1) Become a Virtual DJ on the side = $8,570.60 / year
2) Become a DJ Tutor on the side = $4,500 / year
3) Start a Podcast about DJing and your students = $2,000 / year
4) Build an audience and attract a Brand Deal = $6,000 / year
5) Sell custom headphones with your catchphrase on them = $3,000 / year
That’s a grand total of an extra $24,070 per year. And that’s on the low end!
That’s in addition to your main “day job”! All these are from a set of headphones…
You do the math.
If you have any other ideas, let me know.
